Short on blue skies and sunshine, long on biting insects. Such is Maine in the summer at times. But the daily fog and rain was broken up with intermittent nice weather, giving me plenty of photo opportunities. Fog on the coast presents wonderful opportunities to experience the quintessential Maine coast, to try some photography experiments by the water, and to focus on color and close-ups and to exclude as much milky sky as possible.

I started my trip by staying at the Camden Riverhouse, a hotel a block off the main downtown street and walking distance to everything. I have wanted to stay there for many years and walk the harbor and shops with my camera at all hours.

Camden / Rockport

Camden, with its iconic Camden Hills State Park, is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the rugged trails that lead to stunning vistas overlooking Penobscot Bay, while sailing enthusiasts can set sail from its scenic harbor, experiencing the exhilaration of cruising along the pristine waters.
Rockport, a quaint and artistic community, boasts a thriving arts scene and is home to the renowned Maine Media Workshops + College. Its charming downtown area invites visitors to explore local galleries, boutiques, and cozy cafés.

For the rest of my trip, I made my base on Unity Pond at my ex’s camp. This is not only a beautiful location, but also convenient to the Maine coastal scenery that would be my focus. I planned to avoid spending too much time in Acadia National Park at the height of tourist season, and focus instead on all of the other peninsulas where working fishermen generally outnumber tourists. I did end up spending some time in Acadia, but mostly at the much less frequently visited Schoodic Point.
