The “left half” of Texas

I spent the evening in Austin, one of my favorite towns. There was a full moon…in Austin…need I say more? Continuing the music strand that began in Nashville and passed through Muscle Shoals, I needed to see a little live music in the renown “live music capital of the U.S., home of Austin City Limits, and the town where many an artist paid some hard dues: Janis Joplin, Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lucinda Williams, Gary Clark Jr., Townes Van Zandt, and a personal muse, Shawn Colvin, to name a few.

Moving west from Austin, it was apparent that this part of Texas has had a very dry year, and wildflowers began to transition to more arid-loving plant life. By the time I reached San Angelo, where the rolling plains meet the Trans-Pecos Desert, the landscapes had became more sage, gold, and tan, with mesquite and succulents supplanting some of the green meadows to the east.

This page has a large number of images and may take a minute to fully load, depending on your connection.

I chatted for a minute or two with this girl, discussing the sorts of tattoos appropriate for a well-seasoned man such as myself. She said I could take her picture if I got a particular tat, which she was about to show me on her phone.
Keeping it Weird
They were open. I liked the lights. Didn’t go in.
Artist. I like the exit sign.
Watching the Blurry Dude

I am just trying out this whole street photography thing, getting comfortable talking with folks and getting pictures of them doing what they do. I hope to get better at capturing the soul of a place like Austin as I try out a new genre of photography about as far removed from flowers and sunsets as I can go. I carry my most non- intimidating gear, smallest camera, smallest lens. If it is something I really dig, I will probably spring for a nice rangefinder camera like the one pictured below, just for this purpose.

Clicking on any of the images below will send you into a gallery where they can be viewed at larger size on a computer or tablet screen.
