On this journey, I crossed over the 5,000 mile mark in my post-work-life adventuring. With fall color being about one to two weeks behind schedule this year, I had to work hard to find pockets of autumn scenery… a red tree here, an orange branch there. Most of the days were overcast, with intermittent showers, occasional breaks in the clouds, and generally, a lot of unphotogenic white sky to contend with. However, as most photographers know, an overcast sky yields a very even, soft light, and wet foliage is more colorful than dry. So I tried to leverage these circumstances as best I could photographically.

The Glade Creek Grist Mill is a functional grinding mill reconstructed in 1976 using parts from several other WV Mills on the site of what was Cooper’s Mill. Cornmeal ground in the mill is available in the gift shop at certain times of the year. The mill is iconic in that it has appeared on countless calendars, in decorative art, and in coffee table books. Since it was within the park where I was camping, I drove by it a couple of times a day on my way to other locations, and it ended up being the subject of many photographs on this trip. It was hard to drive by without taking a photograph, as the shifting light and approaching fall colors made it a little different each day.
